Cohort building

Well-designed cohorts of people with HIV are key to understanding the reservoir differences between people and they provide the fundament on which patient centred cure approaches can be built. Our cohorts strive to be inclusive. Everyone can participate in the cross-sectional EX-VIVO cohort which enrols participants since 2012. A relevant aim is to elucidate the impact of host (e.g. sex) and virus (e.g. HIV subtype) on HIV reservoir and clinical strategies for cure.

For longitudinal studies, we wanted to ensure proper representation of the 90% that come into care with a chronic infection (CHRONO cohort), next to cohorts of more exceptional phenotypes including those who initiated ART during acute HIV infection in a nationwide cohort (NOVA cohort) and a cohort of HIV controllers without ART (CONTROLLER cohort). Gained knowledge from the basic scientific discoveries come from a large part of these cohorts.

These valuable cohorts are linked in an international European consortium focused on HIV cure (EU2Cure).
